& 241 - Decade: 2000s The Rise of Terrorism The pictures 1. The original buildings of the World Trade Center in New York City. After being destroyed in the 9/11 attacks in 2001, an even more impressive new tower was constructed on the site and opened in 2014. Its official name is One World Trade Center, the same name as one of the original towers, but it is often also called Freedom Tower. 2. President George W. Bush, who served from 2001 to 2009, and led the American response to the 9/11 attacks. He was widely praised in the early years of his presidency. As the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq dragged on for years with only limited success, however, his popularity fell sharply. 3. A map showing Afghanistan and its capital, Kabul, as well as several surrounding countries. 4. President Barack Obama, who served from 2009 to 2017. He ran for the White House with a slogan promising "Hope and Change." He became the nation's first African American president.
