& 213 - Decade: 1960s New Frontiers The pictures 1. John F. Kennedy, elected president in 1960. He was the nation's first Roman Catholic president. JFK was assassinated in 1963 during a visit to Dallas, Texas. 2. Lyndon Johnson, the vice-president who became president upon the death of John F. Kennedy. Johnson led a large expansion of federal welfare, housing, and education programs as part of his "War on Poverty." 3. An African American woman in a business office. The decade of the 1960s saw tremendous gains made by women and minorities in all aspects of American society. 4. The spacecraft that first landed Americans on the moon in 1969. Astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped from the craft to the lunar surface as millions of people watched on television around the world.
