The pictures

1.  Woodrow Wilson, president during World War One.  He was a history professor and college president before running for political office.

2.  A steamship of the type common when German U-boats began unrestricted submarine warfare.  The Lusitania was among the passenger ships sent to the bottom of the sea by German attacks.

3.  Lenin, leader of the communists - called Bolsheviks - during the Russian revolution.  His real name was Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov.  Once in power, he began the policy of killing political opponents that has been a hallmark of communist governments ever since.

4.  A map of the world.  Woodrow Wilson hoped that the creation of the League of Nations after World War One would prevent similar conflicts in the future.  That hope proved overly optimistic.
