& 139 - Reconstruction and Beyond The pictures 1. Defeated Confederate soldiers roll up their battle flag. The end of the Civil War left many people on both sides bitter, which greatly complicated the task of reuniting the country. 2. Andrew Johnson, president during the years immediately after the Civil War. He had been vice-president under Lincoln, and took office when Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. 3. Federal agents modeling the kind of masks or hoods worn by the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK developed into a violent organization that terrorized Southern blacks, to stop them from voting or holding political office.
