& 121 - Growing Apart: North and South The pictures 1. A machine for making wagon wheels. The factory system spread rapidly in the North in the first half of the 19th century. 2. Slaves on a cotton plantation. By 1850, slavery had become the biggest moral and political issue confronting the people of the United States. 3. Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave who became one of the most famous for his speeches against slavery. He also published an anti-slavery newspaper called The North Star. 4. Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin. The book inflamed the passions of people on both sides of the slavery issue. 5. John Brown, leader of a famous raid on a government gun factory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia). He hoped to seize weapons and start a rebellion by slaves.
