Decade: 1990s  The Cold War Ends

The pictures

1.  St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.  It is one of the most most photographed landmarks in Russia, not least because of the contrast it offers to the dreary architecture of the Soviet era.

2.  A woman police officer on duty.  Crime remained a big concern of this decade in America, especially in urban areas.

3.  A school bus picking up children.  The growing diversity of America in these years was a special challenge to the nation's schools.  Big city school districts had to manage instruction of children from dozens of language backgrounds.

4.  Bill Clinton, president during most of the 1990s.  He tried to steer a generally moderate course between the liberal Democrats in his own party and the more conservative Republicans.
