Pages 220 & 221 - Decade: 1970s  The Watergate Scandal

The pictures

1.  Richard Nixon, the president forced to resign in the Watergate scandal.  One high point of his presidency was a trip to China that helped restore better relations during the tense years of the early 1970s.

2.  A worker cleaning up a toxic chemical dump site.  The environment became a big issue of the 1970s as people became more aware of the dangers of pollution.

3.  Workers at an oil drilling rig.  Energy related issues were in the headlines throughout the decade, especially after Middle Eastern nations joined together to force sharply higher prices for crude oil.

4.  Jimmy Carter, elected president in 1976.  He and his wife Rosalynn, both from rural Georgia, brought a sense of small-town friendliness and decency to the White House at a time when those qualities were badly needed.
