The pictures


1.  Two mentally ill women being held in a jail cell.  In the early 1800s, the mentally ill and insane were often confined like common criminals. 

2.  A bottle used for wine or other alcoholic drinks.  Problems caused by drinking alcohol gave rise to the temperance movement in the early 1800s.

3.  A modern drawing of Harriet Tubman.  She escaped from slavery and became famous for helping others escape and flee to the North.
